Camping Sites / Wild Camping Spots

The following are campsites and wild camping spots we have found on our European travels so far. Some countries allow wild camping, others are not so foreword sighted. Check out the rules and regs for each country you visit, but don’t let it put you off trying your luck! We cannot be held responsible for co-ordinates, they are approximate and may vary with your GPS system.

FRANCE:

Wild camping is allowed in France and there are ample opportunities all over the country. Aires and campsites are common, municipal ones are the cheapest but the facilities vary.

Driving regulations the same as the rest of Europe.

Aire, Neuille Pont Pierre, Near Tours, Centre, France

N47,54744 E0,55152

Parking lot between police station and post office. Bordered by small park and woodland. Good facilities: Toilet, Water, Waste, Chemical Point. David found some campers had been using the parkland as a loo which was off-putting. Good for dog as there is outside space.

Aire, , Biscarosse, Near Bordeaux, Aquitaine, France

N44,43223 W1,16566

A paying Aire (€8/24 hours) next to Lac and under shade of trees. Fantastic location and facilities: Toilet, washing up area, water, waste and chemical point. This aire allows you to camp i.e. put up your awning and sit outside. Wonderful off road cycle and walking paths for surrounding area.

Aire, Port Vendres, Languedoc-Rousillon, France

N42,51778 E3,11375

An aire rammed with vans. Has toilet and access to beach. Loads of people parked outside on road as aire was full. 30 minute walk into town unless you cut across harbour base.

Wild camp, Near Rose Grotto, Dargilnan, Midi Pyrenees, France

N44°10.061′ E3°22.404′

Peaceful spot amongst trees and van was well hidden behind scrubland. Maybe wild boar nearby as heard growling noise at one point in night!

Site, Cote Sud, Millau, Midi Pyrenees, France

N44°06.147′ E3°05.449′

Unhelpful in an emergency. We had a bit of a drama and were both told they could not help us with any texts or phone calls to sort it out, in fact it was ‘our problem’ not what you expect when you are at a campsite!

Site, Compyere, Near Millau, Midi Pyrenees, France

Friendly staff, great riverside pitches. Cheap €15/night. Lovely village within walking distance. Close to Micropolis and Millau.

Wild Camp, Lacside (at nearby lake to Rodez)

N44°11.184′ E2°43.244′

35 motorhomers all parked up together (it was busy because Tour De France was passing through). Great birdlife and very peaceful setting.

Wild Camp near viewpoint

A popular wild camping spot (bits of loo paper about!) Very pretty walks with butterflies and prolific bird life. I would recommend heading up to view point as you can see the sea and various landmarks, just ignore the big communications centre.

Site, Pont Du Gard, Languedoc-Rousillon, France

Airhotel, http://www.camping-grandsud.com/2010/anglais/anglais.htm

Fairly expensive, good activities: tennis, swimming, fishing etc. Close to Carcassonne for sight seeing.

Site/Aire, Estaing, Midi Pyrenees, France

N44°33.537′ E2°40.021′

The aire at Estaing is the main car park for the village and during the summer they offer an option of staying at the municipal campsite down the road for a very reasonable €7.90 including electric. The campsite is at the sports ground so you have options if you want to be active. The co-ordinates are for the aire and if you want to camp follow signs.

Site, ACSI Campsite at Lake

N44°39.337′ E2°42.254′

Lakeside camping, busy high summer with lots of Dutch.

Wildcamp near Puy en Velay, Loire, France

N45°35.874′ E4°20.720′

A lovely, quiet riverside spot with picnic benches and rubbish bins near by. During the night the bubbling stream turned into a bit of a raging torrent!

Site, Near Annency, France

Wildcamp, Near Jussy, France

SPAIN:

Wild camping is not allowed in Spain. There are a few aires, but not many. As a result of this, we mostly stayed in sites. However we did manage to wild camp a few times, just be discreet about it.

Driving regulations the same as the rest of Europe. The Spanish like to overtake and drive fairly fast.

Site, Near Llanes, Asturia, Spain

La Plaz, http://www.campinglaplaz.com

N43°23’59″ W4°39’11″

Very steep, terraced campsite. Took us awhile to decide on where to park and we moved the next day to be closer to the restaurant which had the free wifi point. Stunning views out to the sea and although a main road is close by you can only here it from some of the pitches. If you like the sound of waves to help you sleep try to pitch to front of site. Two beaches to swim onsite although this could be horrendously busy in summertime as there are literally hundreds of pitches. ACSI €15/night

Site, Potes, Picos De Europa, Cantabria, Spain

La Viorna, http://www.campinglaviorna.com

N43°9’27″ W4°39’22″

Most stunning campsite, terraced with lovely grass pitches and a wonderful swimming pool surrounded by the Los Picos snow capped peaks. Wifi only worked near restaurant. Friendly, helpful staff and good food at restaurant. ACSI €15/night

Site, Salamanca, Castilla y Leon, Spain

Don Quijote, http://www.campingdonquijote.com

N40°58’30″ W5°36’13″

A dustbowl. They have chopped the trees back so much that they provide very little shade and the night we spent here was incredibly hot. Unfortunately the pool was not working too! Salamanca more than makes up for a less than wonderful campsite. The site sits next to the river which allows for cycling into the city but beware as it is 7km one way and a rather windy route. There is a motorhome shop opposite the entrance which gave us the opportunity to pick up some much needed extras. ACSI €13/night

Site, Villa De Franca, Near Cordoba, Andalucia, Spain

La Bolafia, http://www.campingalbolafia.com/camping-english/index.php

N37°57’13″ W4°33’15″

Shady and leafy in a quiet area although it is a 30 minute drive to Cordoba. We made the fatal mistake of scraping the top of our van on the helpful metal frames they have put up. Our van is higher than most but do be careful when parking. Some of the branches were low and touched the roof of the van once parked. A lovely swimming pool and good wifi available over most of the site. ACSI €15/night

Freecamping, Gaucin, Andalucia, Spain

N36°31.080′ W5°19.757′

As you come in/go out of town. There is a viewpoint with parking spaces, not too far from recycling area. Has a lovely view and benches to enjoy it.

3 nights parked up on roadside in and around Gaucin. We were here for a wedding and due to transport arrangements couldn’t stay in Jimera De La Frontera which was our first choice. Free camping is frowned upon in Spain which meant we felt nervous parked on street. As Gaucin is rural, not too touristy and quiet we did not encounter any problems but we parked away from any houses and just outside the town. I am much happier in a campsite as you have much better facilities. Unfortunately the camperstops are few and far between in Spain and these provide a happy medium between sites and free camping.

We did stop in at Jimera De La Frontera where we intended to camp. However after being invaded by cats that tore apart our rubbish bin, ripping off a 6 foot branch as we drove out on main road (their maintenance is non existent) and seeing that most of the pitches were permanent put us off and we did not return. Some places just give you a bad feeling and I was much more happy on the road!

Site, Cabo de Trafalgar, Zahora, Andalucia, Spain

http://www.campingpinarsanjose.com/

N36°12’5″ W3°26’36″

After all the wedding celebrations we were in serious need of some R&R so we spent 4 nights at this site, our longest so far. It is surrounded by forest and farm land, the pitches are nice and shady and the sprinklers work full time keeping it grassy and lush. Wonderful swimming pool, I think it is salt water, various sports and a very good supermarket. We caught some football matches in the bar and the restaurant seafood was excellent. Quiet and relaxing campsite with an excellent stretch of sandy beach a 20 minute walk away. We explored Cabo de Trafalgar and enjoyed some great swimming. No beach bars open in June. €15/night low season €28.50/night high season

Site, Conil De La Frontera, Adalucia, Spain

http://www.campinglarosaleda.com/en/home.php

There is a limit to the amount of electricity you can use and they give you a funky (not) bracelet to show you are a legit camper. That said there is a wonderful swimming pool, very good showers and toilets and it is nice and shady. There is some traffic noise from a busy road nearby but it is not too intrusive. €15/night low season €28.50/night high season

El Puerto De Santa Maria

Los Playas de Dunas

A handy campsite for visiting the town or Cadiz by ferry across the bay. The campsite is a half hour walk out of town but right next to the beach. It is busy and not as secure as others we have visited. €23/night.

Wild Camp, Lakeside, Near Ardales, Adalucia, Spain

N36°59.366′ W4°47.465 (Check on google earth)

Wonderful quiet location, very little traffic on roadside. We managed to find a place well off the road to park. View down to lake and good surrounding countryside for walks. We did find shotgun cartridges so be aware.

Alternative spot on lake, bit busier. Some areas do not allow camping, look for signs.

N36°54.104′ W4°49.389′(check on google earth)

Site, Guejar Sierra, Near Granada, Andalucia, Spain

Las Lomas, http://www.campinglaslomas.com

N37°9’36″ W3°27’14″

Overlooking reservoir with views to Sierra Nevada. Handy for visiting Granada by car or by bus which stops outside (30 minutes to town). Good facilities at site but still manages to be quiet and relaxed. ACSI €15/night.

Wild camping, Near Sierra Nevada, Andalucia, Spain

N37°07.332′ W3°25.841′ (check google earth)

The aire in Sierra Nevada looked out onto apartments, so we decided to free camp in a small car park down the road with a panoramic view of the mountains. Quiet road and area.

Site, Orgiva, Las Alpajurras, Andalucia, Spain

N36°54’14″ W3°26’20″

Orgiva is a scruffy town and the campsite is too. The swimming pool was half empty, but they didn’t tell me that when checking in. There was only one other camper who is on a permanent pitch. Some of the service blocks did not have hot water, one had a birds’ nest instead. None of the pitches had been cleared and the supermarket was very dusty! All in all the worst ACSI campsite we have been to so far. ACSI €15/night

Wild camp, Sierra Nevada, Andalucia, Spain

N37°06.573′ W3°01.677′

In amongst the pine trees and looking at the most fabulous view, our free camping is getting better and better. We found an abandoned tar road with absolutely no traffic, it was very peaceful and quiet. Check to make sure you are not at risk from any rockfalls. Perfect for a walk up a mountainside.

Site, El Berro, Sierra Espuna, Murcia, Spain

Sierra Espuna, http://www.campingsierraespuna.com

N37°53’17″

This is our last reduced price stop until September, I thought that we would be away from mountains and gorgeous views WRONG. A small and friendly town with similar campsite. Facilities are a bit basic but very clean. A wonderful swimming pool, great walks and cycling opportunities. ACSI €15/night

Site, Sagunto, Near Valencia, Valenciana, Spain

Malvarossa, http://www.malvacorinto.com/

N39º43’8” W0º11’38”

A bit scruffy (in a very laid back way), this campsite has beachside pitches, tumble out of your van and into the sparkling sea. Cheap and fabulous. €20/night

Aire, Saint Carles de La Rapita, Catalunya, Spain

N40,61511 E0,59407

One of the few tolerated camperstops in Spain. The car park is used for the man made beaches nearby, it backs onto a lovely park (perfect for dog walks and picnics) but is a noisy place. We were kept up until 2am with party animals stalking the streets.

Site, Pals, Catalunya, Spain

N41°58’52″ E3°12’4″

Our most horrendous camping experience so far. A good site but a massive €47/night and we found out later no dogs (oops) on site. It was full of the Dutch on package camping tours, as a result good facilities (table tennis, padel, foot etc) but all over priced.

Wild Camp, Car park close to beach, Pals, Catalunya, Spain

Go to site above and take first left after entrance to campsite. Follow this and take 2nd right.

We were cheeky enough to string up our hammock in amongst the picnic tables and no repercussions. Suburban area and well lit at night. Close to beach and has a toilet.

Site, L’Escala, Costa Brava, Spain

A drive around the town yielded the cheaper site. Very friendly campers, a bit crowded with summer peak rush. No drinking water on site, apparently they want you to buy bottled from shop

Site, Figures, Costa Brava, Spain

Camping Pous, http://www.vayacamping.net/file.asp?par1=58&lang=en

Ctra.N-II, km. 8,5 – 17600 Figueres, Girona, Catalunya, Spain

Cheap (under €20/night) and facilities are not great. However we had a great view onto the fields. Combined with a good nights sleep, a thumbs up.

Site, El Port De La Selva, Costa Brava, Spain

Camping Port De La Vall, Carretera Port De La Selva-llança, 4, 17489 El Port De La Selva, España

Reasonably priced for high season. Easy access to town via bikes and great swimming/snorkelling opportunities nearby.

Ok facilities, short walk to Luz or longer to Lagos. ACSI €15/night.

Wild Camp, Salema, Algarve, Portugal

N37,06716 W8,81035

A lot of wild camping has been prohibited along the Algarve, as you go west it is less restricted but you may see a strong police presence. This spot is glorious, in a wetland with a small beach it is a short cycle over the hill into Salema town. There were 10 other vans there in February.

Site, Sagres, Algarve, Portugal

N37°1’22” W8°56’44”

Amongst trees, can be a bit windy. Track walk into town. ACSI €11/night.

Wild camping is allowed in Italy with permission of the local municipality, police or the landowner. This is the official line, we have camped and not been moved on anywhere but it is difficult as Italy is built up and there are restrictions in certain areas.

Driving rules as per rest of Europe. You are required to drive with your lights on when outside of built up areas. Be prepared for reckless overtaking manoeuvres.

Site, Sankt Sigmund, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Wild camp near Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

N46°28.329′ E11°21.624′

Very steep road up hill takes you to quiet wood. We found a little space by side of road to park. There are a few to choose from. Peaceful location away from traffic of Bolzano.

Site, Val di Non, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Dolmiti Camping Village

Used their camperstop offer of €19.50 per night (plus dog charge). It is meant to be for 3+ nights, but ask for it and they will probably give it to you at that rate. Alternatively, there is an area di sosta (aire) if you turn right just before the site. The charge for that is €20/night.

Aire, Analdo, Brenta Dolimites, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

We were shocked to discover that the aire advertised in our camperstop book in Molveno had put its price up from €12 to €22. As a result we located this aire down the road. The charge advertised is €15 but with electricity we paid €20. Additionally you may be able to have a hot shower at restaurant for €5!!! The aire is a car park looking up to the mountains. It is very quiet by Italian standards (no traffic noise at all) and is only a short walk to the town and cable car. Plenty of spaces available.

Site, Rioveggio, Near Bologna, Emilia Romagna, Italy

Riva del Setta, http://www.rivadelsetta.com

Bit of traffic noise from motorway near by, but was a handy stop for us on way to Florence. Good showers, restaurant, tennis and laundry on site. Not very close to a town, but lovely countryside as you head towards Tuscany from here. We spotted some good wild camping spots along the road, which was quiet. ACSI rate €15.

Parking at marina, possibly paid in high summer. Beware campers are not welcome at the beach end of this small town. We were ok overnight at marina. Good fishmonger just behind. Another issue is we were unable to follow coastal road north due to restrictions for trucks and had to make a massive loop through hills to get round.

Site, Sorrento, Campania, Italy

N40°37.643′ E14°21.508′

Perfect site to visit the Amalfi coast. Motorhomes are not permitted to drive along the Amalfi coast between 6am and midnight. This means your only option is to stop at either Salerno (an ugly dump in my opinion) or Sorrento and take a bus, boat or scooter to visit the beautiful coastal road. The site offers scooters to be delivered to you, beware there is a charge for this of €10 which I was not told about, or you can pick one up in town. Alternatively you can board the local sita bus, they offer a hop on/off charge for tourists; or visit the area by boat via the metro del mare. Site has access to two little beaches and has lovely views of the cliffs and ocean. €23/night including electricity (Oct).
